TYPES OF RENDER
Render on most building originates from Europe and comes in many forms, from simple sand and cement to coloured K-Rend. Most render is used to improve the aesthetics of a property, and it has now become far more common on new builds in the UK.
ALGAE: WHAT IS IT AND WHY DOES IT OCCUR
Unfortunately, unlike the European climate, we are exposed to more extreme types of weather and suffer from a damper, more overcast climate, which makes for ideal conditions for introducing bio-film colonisation.
This can vary from a dulling of the render to full discolouration, and in many cases turning a rusty colour known as red algae (Trentepohlia).
In other cases, black, unsightly discolouring blotch lines run from window ledges and protruding edges. This algae is fast spreading and very resistant, known as black algae (Aspergillus Niger).
Added to this, areas like stone window ledges and cornerstones can suffer from an invasion of lichen in its many forms, from gold lichen (Caloplaca flavescens) to white lichen (Diploicia canescens) and map lichen (Rhizocarpon geographicum). The longer these are left to adhere, develop and mature, the more bio-corrosively active they become. All have lived on this planet for millions of years, and are tough and extremely resilient.
Which methods do we use?
Many UK cleaning companies use Sodium Hypochlorite (SH or Hypo). It works instantly, however it is a very harmful chemical with a strong bleaching effect. Some even use cheap SH that is label-compliant for farming or even swimming pools, but not for render. This is a cheaper option and will have no liability from either the manufacturer or their business insurance, which could explain why some quotes are so much cheaper.
We select one of our professional-grade, label-compliant, fully licensed biocide treatments. The biocide kills the biofilms at the cell wall level by piercing through them, penetrating the organism and killing it all the way down to the root system.
After it dies, it then biodegrades. In addition, the biocide continues to disinfect, prolonging any regrowth. Once dry, the solution is pH neutral and safe for your pets. The process is not instant and normally takes six to eight weeks. After this time we can come back to check and re-treat any patches.
